Using surveys to conduct research Essay What are the advantages and disadvantages of using surveys to conduct research?            Surveys have been used as methods of collecting data for as long as can be remembered. In practically all scientific fields, surveys have proven invaluable in obtaining data that would otherwise be impossible to gather. As a method of determining certain behavioral aspects of society and man, surveys have also proven to be beneficial to all research in that field. Yet as with everything in this world, there will always be advantages and disadvantages.  This short discourse will outline the advantages and disadvantages of using surveys to conduct research.            First of all, the advantage of having a survey is that it allows the researcher to gather more date in a shorter amount of time. The questions in a survey are able to address a multitude of issues that would require a researcher more amount of time in lieu of a survey. Aside from the ability to allow access to more information, surveys can be specifically designed to elicit objective responses. This lends to its value in highly quantitative research that deals with hard data instead of non-quantifiable aspects. In short, surveys are advantageous because they allow the researcher to obtain the information that is required much faster and more efficiently than other sources.            The problem with surveys, however, is that it is difficult to construct an accurate survey that removes biases or false data. Surveys are prone to providing the wrong information. Another problem of surveys lies in the fact that it is not as accurate when gathering qualitative aspects or figures. Opinions or sentiments are very hard to capture and quantify in surveys. As such, as a method of conducting research, depending on the subject matter involved, surveys can be very disadvantageous. Surveys may not always represent the mean of every sample. Surveys must be given accurately in order to obtain an approximate cross section of the sample used. The disadvantage, therefore, lies in making an accurate survey that will lead to the correct data.

Settings: Story took place during the 19th century (1901). The characters in the story were all over the world in different times of their lives. the main character: The main character, Marlow, is a hard to convince man, paranoid man who tells lies although he says at the beginning that he can't stand lies, just so he will be able to live without having to bear the weight of truth on his shoulders. He is an average man. He had a sunken cheeks, a yellow complexion and a straight back as the story describes. additional characters: A lawyer: the lawyer, described as the best of all fellows, is a good honest man who does only good things. He is remembered for his good virtues and he got rewarded for that and was given the opportunity to have the only cushion on deck. A director: the director, also most responsible for the anchor, was a big strong man. He loves to socialize with the ship members. Assay: In the story Heart Of Darkness, the main character makes a decision to go against his convictions by telling a lie about Kurtz1s death to the intended. After careful analysis of the situation, you can see that Marlow is justified in lying to the intended because the lie enables Marlow live the rest of his life without having to bear the weight of truth on his shoulders. Marlow comes to understand and to accept Kurtz1s view of life. The things that Kurtz had both done and seen in his life were in fact horrible, but was something that Marlow was able to look past. He condemning mankind as a whole with this statement. . This is why Marlow keeps the words to himself. It allows him to preserve hope both in the intended, and more importantly in himself. In this story, the main character is faced with with a decision. He had the option to either tell the woman the actual final words of her loved one, or to make up new ones which she would find soothing. Marlow choose the the latter of the two, but it was almost as though he was unable to tell her the truth.

Orion Designs was established five year ago by Amita Patel and her friend, Yi Ling, after they both finished Art and Design courses. Orion Designs is run as a partnership between the two women. There are currently no other partners. Amita and Yi create hand drawn designs in their studio which is located on an industrial estate. These designs are then sent to another business where a computer is used to put the designs onto transfers. When Amita and Yi get these transfers back, they are put onto mugs and plates purchased from a separate pottery company. Orion Designs then sells the finished mugs and plates as souvenirs. Orion Designs has been making increased profits each year. Amita and Yi now want to expand the business. They could increase the range of items onto which they put the transfers (eg. Mousemats), or perform all of the production processes at Orion Designs. Amita and Yi are aware of the risks involved in expanding the business. Even though they have already invested their own money in the business, there may be a need for additional finance as well as more employees. Actual Question: Amita and Yi have recently had a meeting with a local business advisor about their plan for the expansion of Orion Designs. They were given three possible options: * Option 1- stay as they are; * Option 2- take on additional partners * Option 3 – turn the business into a private limited company. Recommend the best option for Amita and Yi, explaining why the other options were not chosen. Introduction: Amita and Yi are two friends who have a business that puts designs onto pottery. They are currently a partnership but are trying to work out whether they should change the ownership type of their business in order to expand. Paragraph 1 (Analysis of Option 1 and Option 2) The business is currently a partnership so Amita and Yi both have unlimited liability. This means they would have to sell their personal assets if the business went into debt. If they took option 1 this disadvantage would still remain. Option 1 is low risk as they are not doing anything different but it might be difficult for them to expand as they won’t have any additional finance. If they know people who want to join their business then they could take on additional partners, these would have unlimited liability as well. This would bring money into the business but these new partners might want a say in running the business and it might not be what Amita and Yi want, this could lead to arguments. Paragraph 2 (Analysis of Option 3) As a private limited company, the owners of Orion Designs have the benefits of limited liability so they can only lose the amount of money that they invested in the company. So the owners of the business would have more security. If Orion Designs want to expand and have new ranges then they will need more money, if they become ltd they could raise the money they need by having shareholders. This would be an advantage to Orion Designs. At the moment all profits go to Amita and Yi, if they were to become a private limited company they would receive less profits themselves as they would have to pay dividends to all shareholders. Conclusion At the moment there are only two partners, Amita and Yi so they will be limited in the amount of money they can invest but they can make all the decisions themselves. If it were to become a ltd then other shareholders would be able to make decisions and Amita and Yi would lose some control of their business. There are also legal formalities involves in becoming a ltd which would take time and cost money. In order to secure the future of the business and expand I recommend that Orion Designs takes option 2 and stays as a partnership but invites other partners to invest in the business. This way they get the advantage of more capital in the business but do not have to spend a lot of time and money becoming an ltd.
